Capello could have risked his job in John Terry’s defence

Days after the F.A. officially stripped Chelsea defender John Terry of his England captaincy, Fabio Capello could be in a spot of bother for his somewhat ardent defence of Terry on Italian TV. The England team football manager publicly slammed the decision of the F.A. and has laid himself open to criticism himself.

The decision from the F.A. to remove John Terry as the England squad captain came before the conclusion of the racial abuse trial that he is involved in, following his alleged racist comments to QPR player Anton Ferdinand. However 65-year-old Capello, speaking on Italian station RAI on Sunday, said that he disagreed with the F.A.’s decision saying, “I thought it was right that Terry should keep the captain’s armband,” according to Metro.

Capello made the point that he didn’t feel Terry should already be punished before a resolution from the civil case comes about but David Davies, former F.A chief executive, has criticized Capello for his outburst. Davies said, “My understanding – and I’ve talked to one or two very senior people at the FA in the last 24 hours – is that this matter with Capello is regarded very seriously. He may well have breached his contract.” Davies made it quite clear that he feels Capello should have accorded with the F.A.’s decision and not rocked the boat and that his public disagreement with the F.A. could end up costing him his job.

Interestingly a poll by Metro (link above) asks the question of whether readers think that Capello is still the man to lead England for Euro 2012. The poll is still ongoing but so far the results show that 43.64% think that he is, 38.18% think that he’s not, while 18.8% feel probably, as there’s no better alternative. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of confidence in Fabio Capello then but at least more said he was the right man than wasn’t.

We’d like to hear what you have to say about the F.A. stripping Terry of the England captaincy and whether you think Capello was right to speak publicly about his thoughts on the F.A. outcome?
