2012 Nevada Caucus Results: Ron Paul Close to Second
After a decisive win for Mitt Romney in Florida it seems he has also dominated in the Nevada caucus. Projected results with the majority of precincts reporting show him with a big lead ahead of the remaining three Republican candidates and we have more news on this plus the full results so far for Nevada 2012.
Both CBS and Fox News projections show Romney way in front after 71% of precincts have reported with 48% of the vote. It’s a much closer race for second though with Newt Gingrich on 23% and Ron Paul on 19%. Rick Santorum trails in fourth on 11%. A few days ago we told about Paul’s attempts to broaden his base of support ahead of Nevada and Maine. Yesterday in an interview with Ron Paul on CNN, Paul told how he thought he could come in second in the Nevada caucus and was feeling good about doing well in Maine so although he may be disappointed he hasn’t got a decisive second place his team is still likely to be pleased with the result from Nevada, as close as it currently is.
Meanwhile Mitt Romney, buoyed by his clear win in Nevada is already looking ahead to the general election. In his victory speech Romney said, “Four years ago candidate Obama came to Nevada promising to help. Mr. President, Nevada has had enough of your kind of help. We’re not going to settle for a president who tells us it could be worse, [unemployment rate over 8%]” according to CBS News. Entrance polling from CBS showed that Romney won every age group except the 17 to 29’s, which was won by Ron Paul, once again showing Paul’s popularity among the young.
Newt Gingrich held a press conference last night to emphasise he is still intending to stay in the race while also aiming series of digs at Romney. Talking of Romney’s alleged dishonesty during debates, Gingrich said “If you can’t tell the truth as a candidate for president, how can the country possibly expect you to lead as president,” according to Fox News. Rick Santorum meanwhile is looking ahead to Tuesday with contests in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado while Ron Paul is campaigning in Minnesota and said to Fox News yesterday, “We want to see how competitive we can be. There were nine (candidates), there’s only four, and many of them have come and gone.”
The full results of the Nevada Caucuses 2012 with 71% of precincts reporting is as follows –
Mitt Romney – 11,822 votes (48%)
Newt Gingrich – 5,623 (23%)
Ron Paul – 4,619 (19%)
Rick Santorum – 2,749 (11%)
