The Motorola Droid RAZR was released last year and its successor with improved battery, the Droid RAZR MAXX came out last week on Verizon. These 4G LTE smartphones have been a big success and now we have news for owners of both, that an official software update is now ready to release and due to be rolled out.

Verizon and Motorola encourage users to download the update, 6.12.173, and it looks as though the update covers a long list of stability and performance improvements, according to Droid-Life. As well as the details on the official changelog an enhanced UI is also a benefit of the update. The size of the update is 151MB and you can choose to wait for the update to show on your phone or you can opt to manually install it.

We’ll give you an idea of some of the changes that come with this software update. As far as data connectivity goes the update offers improved stability after the Airplane Mode is disabled and also gives improved data throughput in low-signal 4G areas. Turning to device operation some of the improvements include an updated widget for Favorite Contacts, better stability when moving between home panels, a more visible email icon and the correct remaining download time displayed when performing OTA updates.

The software update also includes enhancements to applications, such as Mobile Hotspot security being increased, updates to VZ Navigator and Visual Voicemail and improvements to the installation steps for MotoCast. An interesting article on AnandTech also tells how improved battery life on 4G LTE is included in the update although it is not directly referred to in the changelog. The improvement comes from the inclusion of Connected Discontinous Reception, known as CDRX and you can read more about it at the above link.
