US & European Droid RAZR with Unlocked Bootloader

The Motorola Droid RAZR released on Verizon in the last quarter of last year and was a 4G LTE smartphone that impressed a lot of people. However just before its release we learned it would have a locked bootloader, something that we felt would disappoint some prospective buyers. Now though it seems hope is in hand as a Droid RAZR ‘Developer Edition’ is in the offing with an unlocked bootloader.

As a reminder we’ll tell you that the superslim Droid RAZR has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch advanced qHD Super AMOLED display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB onboard storage (expandable), an 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video capture and also a front-facing camera. News of the Droid RAZR ‘Developer Edition’ will be music to the ears of those who like to customize their phones. It’s coming to both Europe and the U.S. and appears to be the standard Droid RAZR but with an unlocked bootloader.

An article on The Verge tells how the Droid RAZR ‘Developer Edition’ was briefly announced on Motorola’s community blog before being taken down again. However, it was later confirmed that this is now available for pre-order in Europe for €499.99 but with no warranty. As for the U.S. the Droid RAZR ‘Developer Edition’ will be released stateside “in the coming months,” through the MOTODEV developer network. Apparently Motorola says that releasing the Droid RAZR in an unlocked bootloader edition serves both the developer community and also conforms to carrier restrictions.

Interesting stuff then but we wonder if Motorola has rather missed the boat with this one. After all the Droid RAZR MAXX has already been released in the US with a battery life unsurpassed for 4G LTE Verizon smartphones. We’d like to hear from you though so will you wait for the Droid RAZR ‘developer edition’ with an unlocked bootloader?
