Ron Paul Poll Latest, 2nd in South Carolina: Consequential Boost
We’ve been following the Republican presidential bids for 2012 and although Mitt Romney may now have won the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary Texas congressman Ron Paul has been hot on his heels. Ron Paul took third and second respectively in those votes and with the South Carolina primary coming up this weekend he is still in a favorable position.
We have noticed in our many posts about the presidential that Ron Paul commands avid support in a way that none of the other candidates seem to. He appears to inspire real loyalty among his supporters in a way that many politicians just don’t and as such we are fascinated in his part in the GOP debates and campaign trail. The good news for Ron Paul followers today is that a recent poll shows him in tied second position at the moment in South Carolina with the vote due on Saturday.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll, brought to our attention by The State Column, shows Mitt Romney ahead on 37% while Ron Paul and Rick Santorum are in equal second with 16% each. However, although Paul has moved into second we have to point out that Romney’s lead at the moment looks pretty insurmountable. Newt Gingrich, former House Speaker came fourth in the poll with 12%. Reuteres reports Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson as saying, “In primary races things can change quickly but it does look like Romney is in a position to win South Carolina, and if he wins … that’s sort of the end of the road for most of his challengers.”
However neither Ron Paul or Rick Santorum are likely to turn over at the uphill challenge ahead, as both will be buoyed by their high positions in the votes so far. Previous polls for the South Carolina primary showed Ron Paul in third place so his advance to level pegging second position will act as further encouragement and momentum for his campaign. An ongoing poll on the State Column asking which candidate will win the South Carolina primary currently has Ron Paul ahead with a whopping 84.39% of the count with Romney in second on 8.96%. While these unofficial polls rarely reflect the actual vote this will still act as a boost to Paul’s campaign team.
On a separate note Ron Paul also received a further impetus to his campaign with the news that last night he received the endorsement of South Carolina state Sen. Tom Davis. Paul’s team hailed the news as “consequential” and also “game-changing” according to abcNews. We’re interested to hear your thoughts on Ron Paul’s move into second place in the polls for South Carolina. If you are a supporter tell us exactly why he commands such respect and loyalty among his followers? Let us have your comments on Texan congressman Ron Paul.
