Mayweather vs Pacquiao Prospect: Not May 5 but June 9 Fight Date?
It’s fair to say that a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the Philippine’s Manny Pacquiao is one of the most anticipated events for boxing enthusiasts. The much-hyped bout that many want to see has never quite come off but news today is that Mayweather wants to fight Pacquiao on May 5. However Pacquiao’s camp has responded that June 9 may be possible, so will Mayweather vs Pacquiao happen at last?
When the Pacman recently fought Juan Manuel Marquez in November and won with a majority decision it opened the floodgates to talks about a fight with Mayweather yet again. However, it seemed that a confrontation with Mayweather was far from Pacquiao’s mind as his promoter Bob Arum told at the time that although a fight with Mayweather might still be possible around November, their priority was another match up with Marquez. This provoked a response from Mayweather’s camp with former fighter and now promoter Oscar de la Hoya. He told how the MGM Grand in Vegas had apparently been booked for May 5 and challenged Pacquiao to step up to the mark but it looked unlikely that the classic fight the world is waiting for would go ahead.
A fight between the two rivals would reap dividends for both men and boxing fans but various hurdles have arisen that stopped a fight going ahead previously and so people have constantly questioned whether it would actually happen. News today is that Floyd Mayweather, unbeaten WBC welterweight champion, has now challenged Pacquiao to go ahead with the May 5 fight. Mayweather had a jail sentence (for assaulting his ex-girlfriend) deferred last week so that a date at the MGM Grand could go ahead and today taunted seven-weight world champion Pacquiao on Twitter, making his intentions perfectly clear by taunting him.
Mayweather tweeted, “Manny Pacquiao I’m calling you out let’s fight May 5 and give the world what they want to see,” adding, “My Jail Sentence [sic] was pushed back because the date was locked in. Step up Punk,” according to BBC Sport. However it seems Mayweather is unlikely to get his way just yet with the Los Angeles Times reporting that Pacquiao’s camp has said May 5 is “impossible” but that June 9 might just be a go. Bob Arum also said that he doubted Mayweather’s challenge to Pacquiao on Twitter as he had heard Mayweather was negotiating a bout with Robert Guerrero for May 5.
Ultimately Arum said, “I want to hear… that they’re willing to move to June 9. Then we can sit down and work out a deal.” We’d like to hear your thoughts on this. Although May 5 certainly doesn’t look like a realistic fight date do you think June 9 might actually see this much talked about fight? Do you think we’ll ever see these two fighters in the ring together? Let us know with your comments.
