Utah Drug Raid Shooting: One Police Officer Killed, 5 More Shot
An incident occurred late last night in Ogden, Utah when police officers attempted to issue a drug-related search warrant. Authorities now say that 6 officers were shot and that one of those has now died. The officer who died was a married father of two young children.
The drug raid went badly wrong after police gathered at an Ogden residence and police spokesman Lt. Tony Fox said that gunfire broke out at around 9pm MST. A statement issued in the early hours of today (Thursday) by the Ogden City Police Department told how Agent Jared Francom had sadly passed away and said “Agent Francom has served the citizens of Ogden City with honor for seven years,” according to msn.com.
Five other officers from “multiple agencies” were also shot and are in hospital with injuries categorized as serious to critical. Police also confirmed that the suspect has non-life threatening injuries and is also hospitalized and that there are not thought to be further suspects. Witnesses told how they heard the gunfire as three pops followed by a pause before further gunfire, around 30 to 40 shots. Janessa Vanderstappen said that police officers told her to go inside and a few minutes later she heard yelling. From her back porch she saw police officers speaking with a person by a backyard shed and ordering him to “put his hands up.”
Off-duty hospital staff were called in to help after the incident according to Chris Dallin, spokesman for McKay-Dee Hospital Center. According to USA Today the incident happened at Jackson Avenue in Ogen and the neighborhood had been blocked off from 34th Street and Jackson Avenue to 32nd Street. Officers involved in serving the search warrant were from the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force, which comprises members of local forces, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
