Apple Event Coming Up in NYC: But What’s the News?

Here at Only Kent we like to keep readers informed about the latest developments in the tech world. We also know that many of you are Apple enthusiasts and as such, any news of an upcoming Apple event is enough to get the taste buds tingling. Today we have heard of an upcoming Apple event due to take place in New York later this month.

Quite what the event will be for is in question at the moment although we usually find that once the invitations are sent out Apple provides a snippet of a clue to tease us all. As always, rumor is rife about the upcoming iPad 3, Apple TV and iPhone 5 amongst other things but apparently this event is not set to be hardware-related so we can safely (?) rule those out. Any major new products would be much more likely to be revealed in California.

News of the event came to us from Kara Swisher over on All Things D and it is described as “important – but not large-scale.” Instead the event, which is set for late January, will be media-related, so is possibly to do with advertising or publishing. Sources also said that Eddy Cue, Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services, is involved in the upcoming event. As he is immersed in many of Apple’s media units such as iTunes, the App Store, iBookstore and iCloud, the event could involve any of these aspects.

Over on SlashGear one suggestion for what the event could be about is developments with the subscription service for iTunes. However as it will be in NYC where Apple introduced the online magazine The Daily, it could be publishing-related with so much of the magazine and newspaper industry represented in the city. As Apple opened a new store at New York’s Grand Central Terminal on December 9, we also wonder if the event could be related to that. With no confirmed date yet available we’re cautioned that the expected time of late January could be subject to change, especially as Apple like to keep us all guessing.

What are your thoughts on what the Apple event may hold? Are you still hoping for a hardware-related announcement even though that doesn’t look likely? Let us know with your comments.
