Samsung Galaxy S II Update to Ice Cream Sandwich: Q1, 2012

If you’re a Samsung Galaxy S II owner and have been waiting to find out if your handset will be receiving the latest OS update then we have some good news for you today. The Galaxy S II will be receiving Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and the update will begin to roll out in the first quarter of 2012.

The Galaxy Nexus on Verizon was finally released in a blaze of sales and one of the key attractions to this handset was that it was the first smartphone to get Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). The new operating system has been highly praised and so of course many other handset owners have been wondering if their phone will get the update.

Back in October we gave an initial rundown on some of the phones that would be receiving the ICS update and one of the first was expected to be the Nexus S. Chloe Albanesius over on PCMag reports that it was announced on Friday that the Nexus S update would be rolled out across the next month. It’s also reported that the Galaxy S II update in Q1, 2012 will be accompanied by an ICS update for the Galaxy Note. Samsung have also stated in a blog post that after these two devices receive the update then it will also be rolled out to other devices such as the Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

Samsung said, “For upgradable models, Samsung will make separate announcements on details of OS updates schedule for each market according to market situation and carriers’ requirements.” While Samsung has set out its plans for the ICS update then, owners of Motorola and LG devices are not so fortunate. Motorola has said that it will be determining which devices will get the upgrade and when from next month. LG has said that the update will come first to its Optimus 2X, the Optimus Black, Optimus 3D and Optimus LTE but given no indication yet of when.

Let’s hope if you’re a Galaxy S II owner that the update goes more smoothly than that for the Nexus S though. The Verge reports that this update rollout has been suspended while Google measures feedback, so installation failures are currently being experienced. Apparently the rollout is still on schedule though. Are you a Galaxy S II owner looking forward to your ICS update? Let us know by sending your comments.
