UFC 137 Penn vs Diaz Plus Fight Video: Challenge to St. Pierre
It was time for UFC 137 last night from the Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas and we had plenty of thrills and spills as usual, along with some shocks and surprises. We’ve already given you full results from every bout, both the main card and prelims. Now we want to take a closer look at the main event, the welterweight bout of B.J. Penn vs. Nick Diaz and we also have fight video highlights for you below this story.
We told earlier how Diaz had defeated B.J Penn with a unanimous decision, 29-28, 29-27 and 29-28 and very soon into the bout we knew we were in for a treat. Penn was strong in the first round and still looked pretty composed by the end of it but the second and third rounds were dominated by Diaz, former Strikeforce welterweight champion. Diaz came out all-guns-blazing in Round 2 but Penn still managed to get in some shots. However Diaz began to take control while Penn had his back to the fence. Diaz did some damage to Penn at 1:40 remaining in the round, with a left to the head and it wasn’t long before Penn was in trouble. By the time the bell went it was Diaz who had command of the fight.
Round 3 began and both men were getting shots in though Diaz looked tireless and began to score more. However with 2 minutes left Penn tried to come back with a flurry of hard shots but it was too little too late and Diaz took a hard-fought victory. After the crowd showed their appreciation Diaz took advantage of the moment to throw down the gauntlet to Georges St. Pierre, making it clear he wants a shot at his welterweight title and saying, “I don’t think George is hurt, I think he’s scared.” Penn meanwhile stunned the fans as he seemed to announce his retirement, after giving Diaz some praise for the win.
At the post-fight press conference Dana White announced that Diaz will get his wish and will fight St. Pierre in February 2012. St. Pierre said, “This is what I wanted since the beginning. Let’s do what was supposed to be done originally. I’ve always wanted this fight – now I want it even more. I can’t wait for Super Bowl weekend.”
