Galaxy Nexus Now Confirmed: Specs, Release & Carriers
We’ve been enthusing about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus aka. Nexus Prime for some time and finally we’ve had the big reveal at a Samsung and Google event in Hong Kong. As expected, the smartphone will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the next Android OS, which will be a huge selling point for Android fans. We now have confirmed details of specs and release news and also some confirmed carriers.
Previous specs leaks had told us to expect a truly notable Android handset and we have not been disappointed. There’s a whopping 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display, which to be honest, has us drooling. On top of this the Galaxy Nexus has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16 or 32 GB internal storage, 5-megapixel rear camera featuring LED flash, 1080p HD video capture and panorama mode, and a 1.3-megapixel front facer.
The Galaxy Nexus’s box of tricks also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0 and 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, according to Darren Murph over on Engadget. That’s not all either, as there’s also NFC support, a proximity sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, a decent-sized 1,750mAh battery and even a barometer. According to Jonathan S. Geller over on BGR the Galaxy Nexus for the U.S. will be initially available as a Verizon exclusive for its 4G LTE network. Other carriers won’t be left out though as there will also be an HSPA+ version. From a recent leak we told how it should be released in November and that has now been confirmed, although there is no specific date yet. Another Engadget article tells how NTT DoCoMo has been confirmed as a carrier for Japan. Carriers for the UK that have been confirmed so far are Three UK, Vodafone and O2, as detailed by Android Central.
There’s no confirmed pricing yet although we gave details of a leaked price and we do anticipate the Galaxy Nexus to be around $299 on the usual two-year contract. Yesterday the Motorola Droid RAZR was also formally announced and this will be a real contender for the Galaxy Nexus. The Droid RAZR is also coming to Verizon and has a confirmed price of $299 on contract, so this would be around the same price level for a Verizon 4G LTE handset. Another handset that is also expected for November is the HTC Rezound, aka Vigor, so very shortly Android smartphone enthusiasts will have a veritable treasure trove of handsets to choose from.
Have you already decided on the Galaxy Nexus as your next smartphone? Did the fact that it will be launched using the new Android 4.0 OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, swing it for you? Maybe you’ll wait to see confirmed details of the HTC Rezound? Let us know with your comments.
