Doubts for Apple iPad 3: Mixed Messages on Release Date
After all the excitement of the iPhone 4S release on Friday we are now turning our attention back to the next iPad, which until we know any different we’ll call the iPad 3. Today we want to talk about mixed messages concerning the Apple iPad 3 release.
Back in September there were suggestions that Apple was in no hurry to release another iPad. However, at the end of that month there were rumors about iPad 2 production winding down, which led to speculation that an iPad 3 may be coming sooner rather than later. Some people felt that the announcement of new tablet competition, Amazon’s Kindle Fire, may have spurred Apple on to an earlier release for the iPad 3. In the last few days though there have been more rumors about the iPad 3 release timeframe.
Over on All Things D, John Paczkowski informs us of new reports about how the iPad 3 is heading towards production. That’s according to Jeff Fidacaro, analyst for Susquehanna Financial, who says that supply chain news suggests that fourth quarter production of the iPad is being increased, with builds of 12 to 14 million units targeted instead of 11 to 13 million. Significantly we’re told that these increased unit builds include new iPad 3 production. Speaking to All Things D, Fidacaro said, “Since our last month supply chain checks we are now seeing 600,000 to one million iPad 3 builds showing up on the plan for the fourth quarter of calendar 2011. Our previous estimate did not include any iPad 3s.”
From this, it’s assumed that Apple is already getting ready to ramp up iPad 3 production ready for an early 2012 release. March would be a likely month as it would be one year from the release of the iPad 2. However more news suggests this may not be the case at all. Don Reisinger over on Cnet notes the All Things D report but adds another slant. The Linley Group’s feeling is that the iPad 3 will include an A6 processor as opposed to the A5 on the current iPad and also the new iPhone 4S. It’s said that this will be quad-core processor instead of dual-core but The Linley Group go on to say that this is unlikely to appear before June of next year.
So really we’re no wiser, other than the fact that an iPad 3 is likely to come out at some point next year. You can be sure though that as more news starts to leak out about an iPad 3 and its launch we’ll keep you informed of all the developments. We’re interested to hear what you have to say on this. Do you think the next iPad will really have a quad-core processor? Let us know by sending your comments.
