Mammoth iPhone 4S Sales: Apple Shares Highest Closing Record
Finally, after months of waiting, the new Apple iPhone was released yesterday. We always knew this was likely to be a high-selling smartphone but record pre-orders showed that it could sell in even higher numbers than first anticipated. After the first day of sales it seems records are being broken and it’s even predicted that there may be 4 million units of the iPhone 4S sold over this first weekend.
When pre-order figures of 1 million units in the first 24 hours were achieved it was a record for Apple. Meanwhile AT&T revealed yesterday that it had achieved record iPhone activations for a single day and Sprint, new to carrying the iPhone, said that it was their highest day ever for sales. As people joined lines across the world (I was one of the lucky ones who strolled into am empty store and purchased right away) it soon became evident that this iPhone could achieve new highs.
An article over on Bloomberg Businessweek reports how the last iPhone, the iPhone 4, sold 1.7 million over the first weekend on sale. Estimates for the iPhone 4S then were around 2 to 3 million and Carl Howe, an analyst for Yankee Group, is now predicting sales of up to 4 million for the iPhone 4S over its first sales weekend. Earlier today we told how Sunday October 16 has been officially declared ‘Steve Jobs Day’ in the state of California and noted that the iPhone 4S had probably received a few more sales because of his sad passing, with some Apple fans maybe upgrading before they would have. However that would only account for some of the mammoth sales we are seeing. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster forecast that 25 million iPhone 4s could be sold this quarter.
At close of trade yesterday Apple shares had reached a record high and had gained over 14% this week. In the day’s trading shares rose 3.3% to close on $422 the highest closing figure ever. The market capitalization of Apple is now $391.2 billion making it the world’s most valuable company. US carriers were also delighted at iPhone 4S sales and after announcing its record one-day sales Sprint Product Chief, Fared Adib said, “The response to this device by current and new customers has surpassed our expectations and validates our customers’ desire for a truly unlimited data pricing plans,” according to Anthony Hernandez over on Mashable. A Sprint tweet said, “Thank you Sprint customers! iPhone 4S & iPhone 4 launch bring our best ever day of sales for a device family.”
Meanwhile AT&T, although happy about its record activation levels cautioned in a tweet, “We are on track to double single day record for activations. This may produce slower activations for some: systems continue at record levels.” Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said that the carrier was happy with sales adding, “Nationwide our stores reported brisk sales and steady customer traffic all day. We are looking forward to the weekend.”
It looks like a huge weekend ahead then for Apple, carriers and retail stockists of the iPhone 4S, as well as for customers trying to get their hands on one.
