Delay for Galaxy Nexus (Prime) News: Out of Respect for Steve Jobs
We know how many of you have been avidly awaiting the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus aka Nexus Prime and have been bringing you all the news on leaked specs and also a possible release date. We told how we were all hoping to hear it made official at next week’s Samsung Unpacked event at CTIA on October 11. However we now hear that the announcement of the Galaxy Nexus has now been delayed.
Many Android fans were keen to hear more about the Galaxy Nexus and also the new OS due to be announced, Ice Cream Sandwich. The Galaxy Nexus is likely to be the first Android handset to launch running on Ice Cream Sandwich and as such (along with some other pretty impressive specs), has drawn a lot of attention and anticipation. However a statement was jointly issued yesterday by Samsung and Google saying, “Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.”
Over on Engadget, Terrence O’Brien tells how the reason for the delay was unsure at first. It was not clear whether the announcement had been delayed because of some issue with the handset or the new OS, or whether it was out of respect for the passing of Apple’s Steve Jobs. However this was made clear later in the day when a Samsung spokesperson confirmed it was because of the death of Steve Jobs and made a follow-up statement to Cnet saying, “We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing.”
Although this may cause some fleeting disappointment we actually think this gesture of respect from Samsung is very decent, especially given the recent troubles between the two giant companies. Adam Mills of Gotta Be Mobile also looks at the delay and tells why it could even be a good thing so check that out for more. Meanwhile you might be interested in our recent look at a possible Galaxy Nexus challenger, the HTC Vigor.
Here at Only Kent we like to follow news from the iOS and Android platforms and think that whether you’re a devotee of either you would surely be likely to admire Steve Jobs and be sad about his passing. We’re pretty sure there won’t be too much longer to wait but in the meantime we’d like to hear your thoughts on the delay on announcing the Galaxy Nexus. Let us have your comments on this.
