Ultimate New iPhone 4S (Not 5) Guide: Release Date, Price & Carriers

After months of speculation and rumors we finally got confirmation of the next Apple iPhone at yesterday’s Cupertino event but was it what you were hoping for? Instead of the two iPhone models that had been widely-rumored, an iPhone 4S and 5, the revelation was for just one, the iPhone 4S. We have full details for you of the release date, price, carriers and more so read on.
Many had expected an iPhone 4S would be a low-end, low-cost revamp of the iPhone 4 while the iPhone 5 would be the new all-singing, all-dancing version. However what we ended up with was some way in between. The iPhone 4S is not low-end at all and has the spec improvements we might have expected for the iPhone 5, however as far as its cosmetic appearance is concerned it’s unchanged from the current iPhone.
As far as that all-important release date is concerned, the iPhone 4S is to release on October 14 (as we previously expected) with pre-orders available from October 7. Those dates are relevant for the US, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany and Japan. Moving on to price the 16GB version will cost you $199 and 32GB version will cost $299 and there’s another option this time around, a 64GB model for $399. The current iPhone 4 will drop in price in the US to $99 and the iPhone 3GS will now be free on the usual two-year contract. All models of the iPhone 4S will be available in both black and white versions, which will no doubt please many people who waited months after release for a white iPhone 4.
On to carrier news we can tell you that AT&T, Verizon and Sprint will now be US carriers. Sprint had been widely expected to become another carrier for the US although the rumors of exclusivity for Sprint, unsurprisingly turned out to be inaccurate. You’ll be able to purchase the iPhone 4S from any of the above carriers, Apple retail stores, select Apple authorized resellers and Apple online, here at Apple.com.
If you’re in the UK the iPhone 4S will be carried by O2, Orange, Three, T-Mobile and Vodafone. Later we’ll be bringing you another guide to all the specs and features of the iPhone 4S so check back with us for more. We’re interested to hear your thoughts on Apple’s new iPhone. Are you disappointed there was no iPhone 5, even though the iPhone 4S is a big step up? Let us know with your comments.
