Imminent Apple iOS 5 Release Date: Set for October 12

After all the excitement of the iPhone 4S unveiling yesterday we thought it was time to take a closer look at iOS 5, the new mobile operating system, set for a release date of October 12. The new OS includes more than 200 new features and was one of the highlights of the Apple event yesterday following the disappointment that some people felt over an iPhone 4S release rather than an iPhone 5.

We’ve been anticipating iOS 5 for some time and had been impressed with what we thought was coming but yesterday’s reveal was even more significant, showing exactly what the new OS is capable of. iOS 5 will be available as a free download next week and is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, the iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation and the original iPad and iPad 2 so many of you will be able to take advantage of the new OS. Apple’s iCloud service will also launch on the same date.

Just some of the new features include a Cards app, whereby you design a card on your iOS device and Apple then prints and posts it for you and also improved Notifications, Reminders, WiFi sync, Newsstand, iMessage, PC-free setup and Find My Friends, according to Dana Wollman over on Engadget. If you have an iPad 2 or are about to purchase the iPhone 4S, then AirPlay mirroring will also be available and that will certainly please many. If you’re using iOS 5 or Lion then up to 5GB of iCloud e/mail storage will be free.

Another benefit of iOS 5 will be quick access to the Camera application straight from the lock screen, as reported by Apple Insider. For much more about iOS 5.0 take a look at the YouTube video below, which will give you a good idea of what you can expect. Also check out this page for comprehensive details.
