Galaxy S II AT&T Release Date & Price Confirmed: Or Wait for iPhone 5?

We’ve been keeping our readers informed with details of the US launch of the Samsung Galaxy S II (or S2) and although the Sprint version, the Epic 4G Touch was launched last week, there was still no news on Ma Bell’s version, which was concerning many. However today we have confirmation of the Galaxy S II AT&T release date and price and there’s not too much longer to wait.

Originally the Galaxy S II on AT&T was thought to have a release date of September 18, which was widely reported. However that date came and went and still no sign and so many readers will be pleased to hear today that the official release date has now been confirmed as October 2. The price announced yesterday is $199.99 on the usual two-year contract, according to Todd Haselton over on BGR. That’s the same price as the Sprint version, although there were some cheaper offers available for that on release.

The AT&T Galaxy S II features a 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor, 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p video capture, 2-megapixel front-facer, 16GB of storage and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Whereas the Sprint and T-Mobile versions of the Galaxy S II are stepping up to a 4.5-inch screen, the AT&T variant is sticking with the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display. AT&T customers will also be pleased to learn that its variant supports the 4G HSPA+ network.

The $200 pricing seems pretty reasonable considering the highly rated specs, although of course some of you may want to wait and see what Apple’s iPhone 5 will offer. Yesterday we told of a likely media event for the launch of Apple’s next iPhone to be held on October 4 with a release shortly afterwards and we’d expect the entry level of the iPhone 5 to be around the $200 mark as well. Joe Wilcox over on Beta News tells how a minimum $15 monthly data plan will be needed for the AT&T Galaxy S II and the no-contract price of the handset will be $549.99.

It’s certainly going to be an interesting few weeks ahead in the smartphone world and we’ll be following all the developments so check back with us. Have you been waiting for the Galaxy S II on AT&T? As you’ve waited so long already, might you wait further and see what the iPhone 5 will have to offer? Let us know with your comments.
