For example, Jim Parsons who won for lead actor in a comedy series was surprised at his win for The Big Bang Theory, even though it was his second Emmy win. Parsons told how he thought the honor would go to Steve Carell for The Office saying, “That’s really who I thought it would be. I felt it would be anybody but me and Steve had a better chance than anyone. That’s what my mother and other prognosticators had said.”
Kate Winslet told of her shock when her name was read out as winner of lead actress in a miniseries for Mildred Pierce saying, “I was truly, really unprepared. I didn’t think I was going to win at all. I’m so thrilled to have won this and the way it came out.” Melissa McCarthy who won the best actress in a comedy series for Mike and Molly was thankful for the intervention of the shows executive producer Chuck Lorre saying, “I’d never [had a lead] before and people didn’t see me that way. Chuck dug his heels in and fought for me. I’m really glad he did.”
