Galaxy S II US Carrier Update: AT&T Sign-Up Page & T-Mobile Processor

The Samsung Galaxy S II (or S2) is definitely one of the smartphones of the moment with its nearest competition coming from the Motorola Droid Bionic or the upcoming Apple iPhone 5. We told you a few days ago about a great saving on the Sprint Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, to be released on September 16 and today we have more carrier news. This time it’s about an AT&T sign-up page and also the fact that as rumored, the T-Mobile variant will have a different processor.
Although the Sprint Galaxy S II variant has a different name, both AT&T and T-Mobile are sticking with Galaxy S II for their versions. The speculated release date for AT&T’s Galaxy S II is September 18 and we have news that a sign-up page is now available on the AT&T website. The news came to us from Joan Lee over on Pop Herald who reminds us that the AT&T model is pretty much the standard Galaxy S II we’ve seen released in other regions with no upgrade in screen size as with both the Sprint and T-Mobile versions.
The AT&T Galaxy S II has a 1.2GHz dual-core processor Exynos processor, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 8-megapixel rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facer and that leads us on nicely to our other Galaxy S II carrier news. At the Samsung launch event for the US Galaxy S II, the AT&T and Sprint versions were proudly on display and were confirmed to have the 1.2GHz dual-core Exynos processor as above. However, the T-Mobile variant was kept much more under wraps with the release date for example, being merely sometime later in the fall. The secrecy surrounding the T-Mobile variant also led to rumors that it may have a different processor than the other two and it seems that is indeed the case.
We now hear from Adam Mills over on Gotta Be Mobile, sourced from TechnoBuffalo (YouTube) that Samsung Telecommunication’s Marketing Manager, Philip Berne has confirmed that the T-Mobile Galaxy S II has a different processor. The reason for the change in processor for the T-Mobile version is probably because it could run on the new T-Mobile 42Mbps HSPA+ network. With an Exynos chip that would not be possible as it offers only 21Mbps HSPA+, however a processor such as the 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm APQ8060 would enable this. This is news then that should certainly please those waiting for the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. We should also remind you that the T-Mobile Galaxy S II has a larger 4.5-inch display. If only the carrier would now enlighten us with a release date then, it would please even more people.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on the Galaxy S II heading to Sprint, T-Mobile and of course AT&T. Are you waiting for the S II or has your eye been turned to another upcoming smartphone? Let us know with your comments.
