Apple iPhone 5 Unlimited Data Possibility: Maybe from Sprint

In the last few days we’ve brought you news on two of the hottest smartphones right now, the Motorola Droid Bionic on Verizon, and the Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, the Epic 4G Touch. Today we have news on the smartphone that completes this triad of main contenders at the moment, the Apple iPhone 5, as it seems unlimited data may be offered by Sprint.

There have been innumerable rumors and speculation about an iPhone 5 release date but most tech sites agree that it still looks likely for the first half of October. As the current iPhone, the iPhone 4, is only available on Verizon and AT&T in the U.S. there has also been a lot of speculation as to whether Sprint and indeed T-Mobile may also get the iPhone this time around. News today certainly suggests that if you’re a Sprint customer it’s likely that very soon you will also be able to get your hands on an iPhone.

Over on Bloomberg, a report by Olga Kharif tells how according to the ubiquitous “people familiar with the matter” not only will Sprint be carrying the iPhone 5 from next month but it will also offer unlimited data plans for a flat fee. This would really be a great step from Sprint as unlimited data plans are no longer available from AT&T or Verizon and could just lure some customers away from the big two carriers. Sprint certainly needs to do something to address the fact that for 15 consecutive quarters it has lost money and needs a way to strike back at the competition and this sounds like a good plan for doing that. Presently Sprint’s unlimited voice and data service will set you back $99.99 monthly.

Avian Securities LLC analyst, Matthew Thornton, said, “It’s a competitive disadvantage if your two larger competitors have the iPhone and you don’t. Getting the iPhone closes that gap.”
Neither Apple or Sprint has commented on this news but as Sprint already offers unlimited data plans for other smartphones it wouldn’t necessarily be a huge surprise.

So far, so good then. However Tony Bradley over on PC World cautions that although the unlimited data for the Sprint iPhone 5 (if true) sounds like a good deal, it may not be the wisest move. For instance customers may jump ship from AT&T and Verizon to Sprint but there’s nothing to stop Sprint dropping the unlimited data plans after some time and moving to the same tiered and capped data plans of the big two carriers. Bradley could well have a point but if you’re a Sprint customer anyway you may be pretty excited about the thought that it certainly looks as though you may get your hands on the next iPhone this time around.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this. Are you already a Sprint customer and pleased to hear the iPhone 5 may be heading your way? Maybe you already own an iPhone 4 on Sprint or Verizon but may head to Sprint for an unlimited data plan on the next iPhone? Why not let us know with your comments.
