The much-awaited WBC Light-Middleweight title fight of Pacquiao vs. Margarito took place last night and it really was a thrilling spectacle and a truly great display of boxing. This time a boxing bout really lived up to its hype and delivered on every level. We told how by the eleventh round many had wondered if the fight would be stopped as Manny Pacquiao, the eventual winner on a unanimous decision, was really punishing Antonio Margarito who had suffered a nasty cut. Now it appears that in fact Margarito’s injuries, inflicted by Pacquiao in his stunning performance, were actually so bad that he needs facial surgery according to Mike Cole on NESN, sourced from ESPN.com.
By the end of the final round it was evident that Margarito’s injuries to the face were bad and he now needs facial surgery on an orbital bone in his face to repair a fracture. After the fight we noted how Margarito had been a truly worthy opponent to Pacquiao and how gutsy his efforts were and Margarito has now said, “There was no way I was going to quit. I’m a Mexican, we fight until the end.”
Pacquiao had actually expressed his concerns about Margarito’s injuries to the referee during the fight and said, “I told the referee, ‘Look at his eyes, look at his cuts. I did not want to damage him permanently. That’s not what boxing is about.” Meanwhile Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach spoke out strongly against Margarito’s corner saying that by not stopping the fight they could have ruined Margarito’s career.
