Breeders Cup 2010: Zenyatta Suffers First Loss – Blame Wins

Thousands of horse racing fans watched the 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic in anticipation on Saturday, to see whether or not Zenyatta would be able to win her 20th consecutive race. However, the 6-year old mare suffered her very first loss, after being beaten by Blame.

According to Nancy Kercheval over at Bloomberg.com, Blame – a 4-year old colt ridden by jockey Garrett Gomez – put an end to Zenyatta’s winning streak yesterday, when he managed to cross the Churchill Downs finishing line only inches before she did.

Speaking about Zenyatta after the race, Gomez said: “I wish she would have went 20 for 20 at the expense of someone else and not us.” Zenyatta was not just looking to win her 20th consecutive race yesterday, but also her third consecutive Breeders’ Cup victory.

Zenyatta will now be retired by her owners, Jerry Moss and his wife Ann. “We’re real proud of our girl,” Moss said following the race. Seth Hancock – the co-owner of Blame – said that he was sorry to see Zenyatta lose, because she really is a very special horse.
