Oklahoma Earthquake today 5.1 magnitude – minor injuries

There’s news from Oklahoma today of an earthquake which has struck with a magnitude of 4.3. The quake was actually felt across 5 states and was one of the strongest quakes ever in Oklahoma, with only 3 stronger since 1907.

The US Geological Survey recorded the quake hit at 09:06 am around six miles away from Norman, Cleveland County. The earthquake was also felt in parts of southern Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas and it appears that fortunately there have only been 2 people reported to have minor injuries, according to Murray Evans in an Associated Press report over on Chron.com.

Police Captain Leonard Judy of Norman said, “We had a couple things fall off the wall here at the police department. We all ran outside to see if something hit the station or something like that.” There were reports only of minor damage, typically things being shaken from shelves. One resident of Pottawatomie County, James Baxter, was in his trailer when the earthquake hit and said, “The stuff on the wall shook. The dogs took off barking. I thought the world was coming to an end, to be honest. It was pretty trippy.”

UPDATE – We have just heard that the earthquake magnitude was updated to 5.1 according to NewsOK.com, which means this was the second largest earthquake in Oklahoma history.

I was at 91st & Yale in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I work in a veterinary clinic. The other technician and 1 Doctor were in the room with a client. I was at the front desk when the main Doctor came up front and opened the front door, turned off the a/c and turned on the blower. Just as he turned to walk back to the back of the Hospital if felt the desk shake and my chair and feet moved. I said "What was that"? and looked out front expecting to see a delivery truck running into the side of the building. He said "I just turned the blower on". I said "No. The building just moved"! He said "Maybe it was an earthquake". I guess he was right!

I was sitting at my desk in an office on the 2nd floor here in Arlington Texas. My flat screen monitor started shaking ever so slightly, and I wondered if it was another Barnett Shale natural gas drilling "earthquake". Then I saw a friend in Stillwater post that things were moving there at the same time. Weird that it could be noticed 170 miles away.

I don't know much about earthquakes, but something that was a little bizarre happened to me this morning around 12:30 a.m., while I was in bed for the night. I had my hands covered with the blanket, but something kept pulling it off, and I noticed that the flowers on top of the dresser were not exactly the same as I had seen them. They looked like they had been turned to an extent because the long grass leaves were hanging over the edge of the top of the dresser, which was not the case before. It also felt sort of like I was swaying somehow while I was lying in my bed. I have had a terrible headache ever since, steadily getting worse, but starting at about that time. Later, I learned that my daughter-in-law was sitting on the sofa in the front room of my apartment when the "actual" earthquake occurred, causing one of the curtain rods to fall and causing the dryer in the kitchen closet to bang around. She said she could feel the apartment moving.

We were in the kitchen this evening visiting and all of a sudden we heard a strange noise that we had never heard before; then noticed our pendant light swaying, for no apparent reason. As we sat at the kitchen table we felt some type of vibration. This incident could have been easily excused, but we could not understand what could have possibly made the light move like that. This occurred sometime around 11 PM or a little after, near Commerce, Texas
