America’s Got Talent: Jackie Evancho lost but won hearts – with duet VIDEO

America’s Got Talent: Jackie Evancho lost but won hearts – with duet VIDEO

America’s Got Talent 2010 finished last night in a blaze of glory with a rip-roaring finale and to a lot of people’s surprise it was singer Michael Grimm who took the title and along with it a contract to perform in Las Vegas and $1 million. We’ve already told about his win in our previous article here so check it out if you want to find out more about his victory.

Meanwhile, Jackie Evancho, the 10-year-old wonder singer, who many thought would win this season 5 finale, came second in the competition and what a worthy runner up she was. She may not have won America’s Got Talent but she certainly won hearts, not just in the U.S. but all over the world where people have been following her progress on the show.

Who will ever forget her performance last night when she performed her duet with Sarah Brightman. Over on the LA Times the good point is made by Marcia Adair, that winning the contest was an abstract goal but for Jackie Evancho the chance to sing with her musical hero was tangible and of the moment, one she will no doubt treasure forever. You can see that performance by looking at the video below this story.

I for one would have loved Jackie Evancho to win but am taking nothing away from Michael Grimm. Jackie will hopefully forge her own path in her own time and will doubtless go on to musical success in her own way after this door has already opened for her. What did you think of the America’s Got Talent 2010 finale and Jackie Evancho’s duet with Brightman? We’d really like to hear what you have to say so please do send in your comments.

Jackie's talent is so big, her voice so great, that we will see and hear more of her for decades to come. She hits each note with a pure and true tone that brings me to tears with its musical beauty.

  • BLBF

I LOVE this littlest opera singer who has won my heart. I pray that her voice and humility continue to assist her in what lies ahead. America would do well to learn for the simplicity of this child………………..I was certainly hoping for her to win last night but understand that $1 million and a Las Vegas contract are NOT what a 10 year old needs at this point in her life.

  • Charlie

Jackie is still a child who has her whole future ahead of her. If she keeps on singing, she will become a household name. The winner last night is a different story. Michael is an adult with few choices. The opportunity given to him last night will help fulfill those dreams. I felt somewhat for all those that didn't win but if you look at them, they all have talent and there can only be one winner. My wife and I agreed that each of them will be performing professionally shortly. All in all, they are all winners….

  • kat seguin

Oh my goodness!! Jackie Evancho's performance last night was absolutely breathtaking-what a moment-why she did not win the competition is beyond me. She's a true star-the bbest on the show-and at only 10 myears old-what a career that lies ahead of her!

  • Jaws

Jackie is a much better singer than Michael Grimm and should of won the contest. But she will be a star for life with that voice!

  • Nysan

I think Jackie's voice is better than Sarah's.

  • mlom5292

i am still not convinced that that is actually her voice

For the third year in a row, the contestant with the most talent has not won the competition at America's Got Talent. However, Jackie Evancho lost nothing; she gained a huge new audience in the U.S. and throughout the world. She will be thrilling audiences when the world has long forgotten Michael Grimm.

  • skp7700

I will no longer watch AMT – the child was robbed of the winning slot and I now believe the whole thing is fixed

  • Matthias

It is sad that Jackie didn't win. But, this is the best for her. The moment will mature her and make her stronger, well prepared for the years to come. She is a real superstar and she will receive lot of support from her support worldwide.

  • garbob

I agree than Jackie's voice easily eclipsed Sarah's. I was hoping she would win but Michael Grimm is good and this is his chance.
At least not a stolen win like Susan Boyle's.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rocknwoman Alisa Comaduran Keast

Our house hold was shocked and so dissapointed. Probably because we wanted to see how gracefully she handled winning. None the less, it was a poor move for the show. Who is going to go see Michael Grimm sing vs. Jackie. I think Jackie's show would make a MUCH better Vegas Hit. I guess I SHOULD have voted!!!

  • benny chandler

I imagine performing in Vegas was not really what her parents had in mind for her – and perhaps the producers obliged. She did not need to win that show to be the winner – and she is clearly better than Michael Grimm – just another good bluesy singer – but with nothing especially amazing about him or his voice. He caught a big break and he knew it.

  • Debbie Steinberg

Jackie is totally amazing, she should have come in first place by all means!!!! This child had a gift that I have never seen and this Michael Grimm that won is an American Idol type, not America's Got Talent. Totally disappointed that Jackie did not come in first place, she DESERVED IT BY ALL MEANS!!!!!

  • LCat

Wow. I didn't expect to be overwhelmed with so much emotion watching this performance. What a perfect song for a perfect moment of a perfect little girl.

  • revdo

There is no doubt in my mind that Jackie should have won this contest. It was a talent contest and not a popularity contest. and she clearly has the best voice with Prince Poppycock being a close second. I think the fact that she is only ten years old and that opera is not the usual Vegas t ype act kept her from winning. She is SO gifted and has an amazing voice and I know that this is just the beginning of a long musical career for her. Her last performance brought tears to my eyes and gave me goosebumps. Thank you Jackie and best of luck in your future.

  • Roger

Jackie has more talent in her little toenail than in all of Michael Grimm !!

The voting only goes to show that America has more rednecks than educated people….That’s the negative

The positive is that Las Vegas is no place for a 10 year old anyway, and her path forward from here will be much more secure and her eventual greatness assured. Another Sarah Brightman in the making. God Bless you Jackie for brightening all our lives :)

  • Hanna

Jackie was definitely the Most Talented in the competiton. Her performance last night was even better than Sarah B. Looking forward to her CD it’s sure to go platinum!

  • Cindy Snow

Keep this in mine Jackie, it's the perfomer who comes in second place who gets all of the attention. Remember what happened to Adam Lambert and Susan Boyle. It will happen to you to. Jackie was the best performer and always will be in my mind. Good going girl.

A Repeat Of Last Season .A Country Boy Wins Over Favorite.

  • Vanessa

I think Jackie was lip syncing, her mouth did not move on time wit the music and she is a ten year old girl that sounded like a sixty year old woman. It just doesn't add up!

  • serious

her mouth does move in time with the music…if you know ANYTHING about opera. that child has the most amazing operatic voice I've ever heard it is a gift.

  • Dan

Why not. Without AGT you probably would not have found out about her and enjoyed her performances. A star is born.

  • Stephanie

Jackie's voice is like comfort food for the soul, or a blanket and hot chocolate when you come in out of the cold, the tone warming you from your ears to your inner being.

  • RonH

There's no explaining stupid I guess.

  • Will

Jackie was incredible. She is the winner. The votes are unimportant.

  • David Perkins

I was GASPING when SB started singing because it appears she has totally lost her voice! It was AWFUL, a total embarassment. She should not have been allowed to appear on stage with a voice is such disrepair and awful condition.

  • Anna

Jackie has a very beautiful, natural voice. She sang more clearly and powerfully better than Sarah, which of its fact proves her talent. Not electing her on grounds that she is 10 and cannot perform in Vegas is not fair. If the latter criteria are the most important and not the talent, then they should set explicit eligibility criteria of who is to perform in that show and change the title of the show itself. It is true, as some in this forum say, that Jackie has a great future… but she was given an opportunity to participate equally with others to prove her talent and she really proved it. The elected singer's talent cannot be compared with Jackie's at all. He will not be as memorable in my mind as the Jackie's performance for years to come.

  • Jacqueline Tai

Jackie is the winner, she is THE SUPERSTAR. Pier was absolutely right, she should win. American has witnessed a new star being born. We have never seen such a talent, at her age. The Americans have made a big mistake. I am disappointed, watching from Canada. However, I know she will succeed in her own right, anyone will love to see her anywhere in the world. I am happy for Michael Grim. He needs this break. It is like a fairy tale comes true for him. Not forgetting Prince Poppycock, he is truly talented. I vote him as the best material for Las Vegas entertainment.

  • joe

unbelievable. jackie by far the best. im shocked, almost feel like protesting the show. my order for top 4 is jackie, fighting gravity, poppycock then grim. it def is a fix….

  • Unsilent Majority

Jackie Evancho was not only the most talented in the entire competition (and that is what this is supposed to be about – Talent, isn’t it?), but she, at her unbelievable young age, puts to shame established singers of all disciplines. Not only that aspect , but the grace and dignity she exhibited when the result was announced – Jackie Evancho is, pure and simple, class – World Class at that.
Michael Grimm, while having a decent voice, mimics the performers whose songs he sings. For example,
he sounded just like Al Green on his version of “Let’s Stay Together, and exactly like Michael Bolton’s version of Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman”. He was good, but nothing I couldn’t see any given weekend at a venue which has a cover performer or band.

  • Doreen

Jackie was superb – she is not only a gifted singer, but she displayed such humility and innocence. She certainly won all of our hearts. I will always remember how she sang with such joy and passion. The duet with Sarah was unbelievably beautiful and was the by far highlight of the season. I however will no longer be watching the show either because the final decision was not based on talent – Jackie was the real winner – of this, there is no doubt in my mind. God Bless you Jackie! He was certainly smiling upon you as you performed not only for us, but for HIM!

  • TiredOfMorons

…"move on time wit the music"

Correction, it's "with" and not "wit", you dimwit. It doesn't add up to you, because you're a moron, and guess what over 20 million people disagree with you, fool!

  • Judy

This child was given a gift by not having to perform in Vegas. Michael will do well with his career and can handle all that surrounds a career in that environment – not in a negative way but in a positive way. He has talent – just a different kind of talent.

Jackie has given the public a chance to see a healthy child raised in a loving family being nurtured in her gifted, passionate talent and not exploited. I pray that it continues to be a joy for her to sing. It is pure joy to listen to her.

God i hate to sound like a conspiracy theory nut but i would like to see all voting data on the final 4.I have studied numerous
comments , over the last month or so, on a number of AGT acts . What i've found is that the word TALENT is used in reference
to JACKIE perhaps more then all the other acts put together .What i found in regards to the other acts was a lot of ( I LIKE )
this type of music over that type of music,or this type of entertainment over that type of entertainment. ( I LIKE ), used in this
manner has nothing to with, TRUE TALENT,.If these were the driving motives behind the voting, then i believe what we actually
had was a POLL on a preference rather the a vote on (TALENT). JUST MY OPINION
P.S. Jackie don't forget to fed the DUCKS.

Wow, I can't believe everyone was so in love with this child…We thought she was like a little trained robot or a Stepford Child…every word that came out of her mouth was a canned speech fed by her parents. They need to let her be a child. Yes she has a voice, but our daughter is an opera understudy and she and all who know voice training say her voice is being ruined. So happy Michael Grimm won, he has an awesome voice and I Loved his humility and happiness at winning. His is also a true Las Vegas act.

  • paul

Follow the money. Shows like America's Got Talent aren't produced to actually find talent. Their objective is to make money and top rated shows make the most dough. My guess is the producers of these types of shows have determined that uncertain outcomes get the best ratings, and uncertainty depends on bizarre results. Susan Boyle lost to a circus act? Jackie Evancho lost to a guy who could not even make it into the competition on his first try? Does an independent firm audit the voting? I'll bet not.

  • Rob

If I'm correct it's the American people who picked the winner not the judges. I would have never believed that there could be such blind and incompetent judgment of talent by the American people who made this decision. This decision is a disgrace to America's Got Talent and a wake up call to talented performers at a national level and around the would who witnessed this unfair decision. It is now clear that the American people have no idea what true talent is and that America's Got Talent needs to let the judges pick the winners or come up with some other means of adjudication so that a disaster like this will never happen again. As the 'Ave Maria' sang flawlessly through Jackie's' lips opposed to 'When a Man Loves A Women ' the decision should not even have been close. This was a “no brainer” and the American people rewarded this Godly blessed talented girl with a major fumble. I pray she is too young to realize the magnitude of this incompetent decision. Imagine a 10 year old opera singer holding her own with Sarah Brightman, one of the greatest opera singers in the world. I was so shocked at this incompetent decision, I wonder if America's Got Talent could see this was a major tragedy or are they as blind as the people. I concluded two things from watching this disgrace, first – If America's Got Talent want to continue being a top viewer production they better take the judgment of talent out of the hands of the people and second – from this terrible decision by the people, I will never watch America's Got Talent again.

It's quite obvious something went wrong here. It was either a technical glitch (some people reported trouble calling in), or something else. I think people are more upset with the reasoning of the outcome more than they are for the actual loss. You don't have to be a detective to wonder why, after she received over 3 million hits alone on YouTube, and was getting a 48% win bracket on Internet polls the day before voting. This does not add up. My suspicion is that there was either a texting network scam or some other reason. As the saying goes, if something seems wrong, it likely is.

Regardless, I'll never watch the show again and NBC should be ashamed of letting kids compete if the outcome is questionable.

  • ejc1939

I suppose that now you think, besides the production company, the crew, the tv people, other contestants (who surely would tell) at the judges…….ad infinitum…..that they also got Sarah Brightman in on the "fake" Give me a break!!!!!!!!!

  • Nexuss

Here's the resolution to the lip syncing theory, JACKIE DOES NOT LIP SYNC, it's your cheap cable service and your $2.99/monthy cable membership that's giving you delayed voice after video. It's time to upgrade Vanessa!

  • Fisherman

Benny, I think this comment may have hit the nail on the head and I have made the same comments in other blogs, tweets, etc. and I think she knew it before hand…did you see the coy smile on her face just before the results were read. I told my wife, when I saw that smile, that Grimm had won and this little girl knew it. Kinda like, "I know something – but I'm not allowed to say anything just yet," and then, not the slightest surprise or disappointment at the reading of the result, just an immediate hug for her buddy, Grimm. Really makes one wonder…but if that were her wish and that of her parents, then justice was served and she did say she had achieved her goals from this show, by being discovered and also a duet with her idol.

  • Fisherman

Part II: This child is an absolute stunning delight and a total breath of fresh air in today's world! I heard her sing, right up front and personal, here in Pittsburgh, at a local function about a year ago and like a Reporter said later, in his article: "After she was done singing we were all left with the overwhelming feeling that we just did not want the music to stop…she was that good." P.S. She did not lip sync there either and I was privledged to her her voice in person and it truly is straight from Heaven and I'm here to tell you that Piers's goosebumps are gonna become commonplace in the future anywhere she sings!!!

  • Linda L

Jackie was the only reason I watched the show. She gave me goose bumps when she sang and a smile on my face. I look forward to watching her career grow. In my books, she was the true winner.

  • Galen

I hope all of you "Jackie Evancho supporters" out there caught Jackie on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno last night! She wowed the audience yet again, and received yet another standing ovation! Actor Jimmy Smits remarked that Jackie sounds "like an angel, like a voice from God" when she sings! Amazing!

  • wayne1

This has been the most confusing mess of a Americas Got Talent show ever. Even the writer of the lead article is under the eroneous idea that the winner received a Vegas contract. Not so. As the winner his name will be first on the marquee, thus headlining all of the AGT tour stops of which Vegas is just one. He also won the million dollars in the form of a forty year annuity. Jackie lost because of all of the Las Vegas hype produced non stop by AGT. There is a moral thread in America that will not vote to send a child to sin city. Vegas has no more distinction than any of the other 24 tour stops yet it was hyped non stop. There are other less significant reasons why Jackie lost but the major factor is Vegas hype. It will be interesting to see if AGT looses viewers in season six over the Jackie Evancho loss coupled with other disapointing results in years past. Voters this year never understood that there wasn't going to be some big Vegas deal for the winner and AGT was complicant in never clearing the air. This show insists on weaving Vegas into the show fabric year after year to the detriment of child acts.

  • wayne

Not one million but a 40 year annuity at 25K per year or a lum sum payment of $330,000. THERE IS NO VEGAS CONTRACT FOR THE WINNER. The only significance of Vegas is that it is a tour stop no different than the 24 other tour stops. The winners name is first on the marquee thus a headline show in Vegas. Americas Got Talent failed to mention that the winner headlines a show in every tour stop city. Americas Got Talent is to blame for Jackie not winning plus people who liked her not voting. This show should be about the best talent winning. The best talent didn't win because of needless Las Vegas hype and dismal communication with voters. How can a child win with so much confusion created by Americas Got Talent about Vegas? People should be outraged.

  • wayne

Jackie didn't win this year because of Americas Got Talant's non stop Vegas hype coupled with their absolute lack of communication with voters. People still believe the winner gets a Vegas contract. It is surprising that she was able to finish second. Who wants to send a sweet innocent child to sin city? People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

Americas Got Talent does not support child acts. How can children win in a competition where the sponsoring organization constantly hypes Las Vegas. No one wants to send a child to sin city. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent. I don't know why they even let minors compete.

  • wayne

Win or lose Jackie will perform in Vegas because she is on the TOUR. People have so many damn misconceptions about this years show. Americas Got Talent let everybody think whatever they wanted to think and kept quiet. Vegas is a one hour show just a damn tour stop just like all the other tour stops. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

Americas Got Talent torpedoed Jackie's chances of winning with Vegas hype. Who wants to send a child to sin city? AGT never explained to voters that Vegas is just a tour stop no different than 24 other tour stops. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

Jackie who lost is going to Vegas because she is on the TOUR. If she had won she would be on the TOUR. The Vegas show is one hour long no different than the 24 other TOUR shows. Jackie lost because of unnecessary constant Vegas hype. Who wants to send a child to sin city? All ten final acts participate in the TOUR. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent for fostering so many misconceptions and then keeping quiet.

  • wayne

    Idiot

  • wayne

The best talent should win national talent shows. Americas Got Talent should NEVER HAVE POLICIES THAT INFLUENCE THE VOTE. They did and the best talent lost. Who wants to send a child to sin city? People still don't understand what significance Vegas had. Its a tour stop for a one hour show thats all zippo nada. THERE IS NO VEGAS CONTRACT FOR THE WINNER. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

Anna there are misconceptions about the significance of Vegas. Jackie was always going to perform in Vegas win or lose because she is going on the tour. Vegas is just a tour stop just like all the other 24 tour stops. All shows including Vegas are about one hour long. The much trumpeted "The winner will headline a Vegas show" simply means that the winners name will be first on the marquee, not just in Vegas but in every city the tour goes. Jackie lost because of unnecessary Vegas hype. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

The best way to protest is to not watch the show. It is a joke. A talent show winner in a national competition should be the best talent. Americas Got Talent should never have policies that influence the vote. Who wants to send a sweet innocent child to sin city? Vegas hype was unnecessary. Vegas is a tour stop, there is no Vegas contract for the winner. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

Judy your comments just reflect how good a job Americas Got Talent did to thouroughly confuse the voters. All ten final acts will perform in Vegas including Jackie. Vegas is after all just a tour stop just like all the other 24 tour stops. All tour shows including Vegas are about one hour long. Michael doesn't have a contract to perform in Vegas as a part of his Americas Got Talent prize. I assume you voted to not send Jackie to Vegas. The best talent in a national talent competition should win. Americas Got Talent should have never engaged in unnecessary Vegas hype that influenced people to vote a certain way.

  • wayne

Experts much more qualified than you, your daughter, or I have said that theres no reason to worry about Jackie's voice. She is not a belter. She sings easily almost effortlessly. She sings from her head register not her chest register. The chest register is the one that causes problems with vocal cords. Jackie sings from the healthy part of her voice. I don't expect a few words from me could sway you and I could go into much greater detail. Jackie is advanced socially as well as musically. People have a difficult time with a ten year old that acts like a 20-30 something. I doubt that parents or wild horses can hold this child wonderling from doing what she wants to do with her life. If you caught her on Leno you saw the musical side as well as the poised confidant young lady she is and a glimpse of the delightful child she is.

  • wayne

I don't think you should blame the American people entirely. After all she got enough votes to finish second. Americas Got Talent alone is to blame for the second place finish. The Vegas hype was unnecessary. Vegas is after all just a tour stop for a one hour show just like all the other 24 tour stops. There is no Vegas contract for the winner. No one can possibly sign independantly until after the tour. Americas Got Talent influenced the vote. Who wants to send a sweet innocent child to sin city? Voters were confused about Vegas and it's significance. Americas Got Talent is to blame for that. People should be outraged at Americas Got Talent.

  • wayne

Americas Got Talent influenced the vote in regards to Jackie with constant unnecessary Vegas hype. Who wants to send a child to sin city? I say unneccessary because Vegas is after all just a tour stop for a one hour show just like all the other 24 tour stops. There is no special deal in Vegas for the winner. He may be signed but it will be after the tour is over and will not be a part of his prize. People should be outraged by Americas Got Talent conduct.

    Dear Sir :
I have never heard such a voice, regardless of age that Jackle has been blessed with . She has perfect pitch and is going to be the Greatest in the world in years to come . I listen to her perform every night as she just fascinates me with her perfect voice . In a way I am glad she took second place, as Susan Boyle did . Exposing a 10 year old to Las Vegas is not a good start in her musical career . She needs to be exposed to the world of culture and people who really appreciate the talent of this yougn lady . She has it all , and I say this without reservation .
    My Very Best Regards
    Bob Davidson
