U.S. Open Tennis 2010: Purse and prize money for winners

We’re into the very final stages of the U.S. Open 2010 tennis tournament and at this very moment the men’s singles final between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal has just begun. The match should have been played yesterday but was rained off, however so far today the weather looks promising and at the moment two of the best tennis players in the world are on court in the sunshine.

We know how many of you are interested to know all about the total purse and prize money for these big tennis tournaments and we have that information for you about the U.S. Open 2010. This year it was announced that there would be record prize money for the event with a total purse of $22.6 million, over a million more than last year’s total purse, according to usopen.org.

Kim Clijsters of Belgium already won the women’s singles title and won base prize money of $1,700,000. Whoever wins the men’s final right now will win an identical amount. That’s not all though as this is just the base amount and both players could win up to $1 million extra if they are in the top 3 men and women finishers in the Olympus U.S. Open Series where another $2.6 million is on offer in total.

The other base money for the losing finalist for both men and women is $850,000, while if a player finishes in the semi-final there’s $400,000 and a quarter-final finish earns the player $200,000. If you want to see a table displaying all the top prize money as a base amount or with bonuses go to usopen.org. As I speak the first set of the men’s final is drawn on 2 games each but shortly one of these players will be at least $1,700,000 richer. What do you think about the prize money on offer at the U.S. Open 2010? We’d be interested in your thoughts on this so feel free to send in your comments.

Thanks me and my wife are watching the game now and I was asking the question.
I knew what the purse for the women was however I thought the men would get more….not being sexest but usually it's that way.
But the truth is that tennis is one sport where both men and women pull alot of crowds.
I think maybe volleyball both sexes may have the same popularity as well.
anyway thanks again. the game is at the 4 set nadal up 2 – 1

Women's event does not justify same payout as men's 3 of 5 sets does

I'm all for equal pay for equal work. So why is the women's prize money the same as the men's? They should play 3 out of 5 also.

  • Rachid

Funny, because the value of the match that women generate is nothing compared to the value/pleasure/fun that men produce. Also the way women prepare/train is not even close to the way men train and prepare themselves, but they still earn same prize money. Billions of people in the plannet wanna watch men play a final when they won’t even care about watching women’s final
Awarding men and women same prize money is simply Inequality rather than equality
