Ford Recall 575,000 Windstar vans: Full details

Hot on the heels of the recent Mazda recall and also the GM recall comes news of yet another auto recall. This time it’s for the Ford Windstar van and involves around 575,000 of them from U.S. cold-weather states and also Canada.

The cause of the recall is due to concerns over the chance that the rear axle may fracture because of corrosion. The recall was instigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after they opened a preliminary investigation back in May. The federal regulators had received over 200 reports of rear axle fracture due to the design, which had resulted in 2 minor crashes. However the amount of complaints has now risen to 950, according to Bernie Woodall over on Reuters.

The model years of the vans involved are from 1998 to 2003 and states involved are Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin and the whole of Canada.

A Ford spokesman said that around 463,000 of the vehicles involved in the recall are in the U.S. with the remainder in Canada. If you have one of the vehicles you’ll be asked to take it to either a Ford or a Lincoln-Mercury dealership for an inspection to take place. Ford will offer either a repair or alternative transport if parts are not currently available, if there is a crack.

If there is no crack, owners will be asked to return the vehicle at a later date for reinforcing brackets to be put on the axle. For more on this go to reuters.com. Have you got one of the vehicles involved in this recall? We’d like to know your thoughts on this so do send in those comments.
