90th Anniversay of the 19th Amendment – Significance marked by Google

Today is the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment of the Constitution being ratified and the day has been marked not with a Google Doodle, but with a special message on the Google home page. It’s an important reminder of a significant day in history but it does seem a little odd that Google chose the one-line message rather than a unique Google Doodle.

The exact message reads “Celebrating 90 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote.” An article over on MTV by Kyle Anderson makes the interesting point that while the USA was founded on liberty, democracy and equality, it’s rather hard to believe now that women did not have a vote for the first 144 years of its existence.

There was an awfully long fight before women received this right, starting in the post-Civil War era when the amendment was endorsed by President Woodrow Wilson and was narrowly passed in the House of Representatives in 1918. However the amendment was defeated in the Senate by just a few votes. Many politicians though, lost out in the fightback by the National Women’s party and when the amendment arose again in 1919 it was easily passed by both houses.

It was only when the amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920, that women finally received the vote. For more on this go to mtv.com. It seems as though the nation has come a long way in 90 years and as mentioned it hardly seems possible that it was only 90 years ago that women had no right to vote. We’d like to hear what your thoughts are on this so please do send in your comments.

Something interesting to know,, The 19th Amendment of the Constitution giving rights for women to Vote!

Times change. A hundred years ago, white women opposed the vote for black men and women, using black women only where it suited their own cause. Women's organizations were segregated, and black women were asked to stay away from the really important events. This month also marks the 90th anniversary of the first beauty pageant. It's also hard to believe that 100 years ago marriages were arranged, and dating by young people was just becoming acceptable. Women always had power of course, just not combined voting power. The way men don't have the ability to vote on mens issues today. Universities don't even want men to be studied. Over 300 Women's Studies degree programs in the country. Not one male studies program. Without the ability to associate, as males, to study, to mass political power AS MALES, men will remain disadvantaged to today's superwoman society. Boys as young as 6 years old are already being destroyed by this. Happy "birthday" women's vote. It was a vote for racism and divis-erty. Like the US itself, which failed to abolish slavery in 1776, and which fought a civil war 90 years later, the women's movement lost its way just as it was beginning. The other shoe has yet to drop, and it won't be a high heel.

It becomes tiresome to hear people like you speak of only what you don't know or choose not to think about. Men still continue to earn more money for the same job than women by an average of 10% across the board. And as far as the "male study", the group that is really going to suffer is the white race. Racism is just fine as long as it is against the white race. There are no white college funds, white scholarships, special grants because you are white, or white pride clubs in schools. Not to mention if I say black boy or that Mexican kid-but white boy and white kid seems prefectally acceptable. Racism is truly at an all time high…and its acceptable because it is aimed at white people. I am tired of suffering the conquences of my ancestors. My family and children deserve the same "rights" that are afforded to everyone else. The day we start giving scholarships, jobs, and raises based on performance rather on race will be the day we should truly celebrate!
