OpenGL 4.1: 3D interface for Mac OS X and Linux

OpenGL received a big boost yesterday after the Khronos Group announced that a new 4.1 version has been released with a 3D interface, only a few months after the 4.0 version was launched. This is good news for the graphics interface consortium as it will strengthen them to take on Microsoft’s DirectX.
Go to Cnet.com for the full article by Stephen Shankland which contains plenty of quality news and information on the topic. OpenGL is the 3D interface of choice for Mac OS X, Linux, and many 3D design applications, however when it comes to the biggest consumer market, games, DirectX is at the top of the tree.
But on the other hand OpenGL has also been backed up by mobile phones and the web. For example there is Apple’s iOS, used on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch and for the web some of the top browsing vendors excluding Microsoft are supporting a 3D Web graphics technology called WebGL which is a variation of OpenGL.
