Chocomize: Sweet taste of success

It all started when three friends, Nick LaCava, Eric Heinbockel and Fabian Kaempfer had just graduated from Columbia University and were trying to come up with an idea for their own company and believe it or not the penny dropped following an incident with melted chocolate. That led to their company, Chocomize.
When the three friends were traveling in a car and some candy melted on the backseat, if they’d thrown it away Chocomize may never have been born. However Nick LaCava was loathe to discard the melted candy and put the concoction of dark chocolate, marshmallows, Gummi bears and granola, into the fridge. Several hours later they decided to try it and in those moments knew they were onto something, according to Jacque Wilson over on CNN.
La Cava’s sweet tooth was the inspiration behind Chocomize, a customized chocolate company whereby customers can create their own chocolate bars by ordering ingredients of their choice online. After setting up a business plan, they researched pricing on rent, machinery, packaging and website development and then sent a survey out to ask if people would consider using such a service, what they might pay, and what likely ingredients they would choose. Even the company name was voted on by survey respondents.
In November last year Chocomize went online and by this March they turned a profit. The three friends have turned an idea from a mishap into a success or as LaCava says, “Being my own boss is great. Plus, being able to eat all the chocolate and candy I want without having someone yell at me is pretty awesome.” For more on this and to see the ten most weird orders go to cnn.com.
