Love Parade in Germany: Festival cancelled for good after 19 die

Yesterday we brought you the tragic news about Germany’s Love Parade music festival in the city of Duisberg, where tragically a stampede occurred outside a tunnel used to get into the venue. It resulted in the deaths of 19 people and over 300 more were injured.

There were terrible scenes and news footage which was distressing to watch and now it almost seems beyond comprehension that an event that was known would attract so many people, over one million, had only one entrance, through a narrow tunnel. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, expressed her sorrow and pain and announced there would be an intensive investigation.

Organizers have been blamed for what happened by survivors amidst talk of the venue being too small and warnings of overcrowding and German prosecutors have now launched a criminal investigation into the incident, according to BBC News. The organizer of the festival, Rainer Schaller, appeared at a news conference with officials today and said, “Out of respect for the victims, their families and friends, we are going to discontinue the event in the future, and that means the end of the Love Parade.”

Sixteen of the nineteen people killed have now been identified and they include a number of foreigners. One Australian woman, one Italian woman, a Dutch man, a Chinese woman and two people from Spain were among the dead, who were mostly young people. For more on this go to BBC News.
