Toyota Subpoenaed: Steering issue not going away

Toyota Subpoenaed: Steering issue not going away

The problems for Toyota just continue to worsen it seems. Just days ago we told how the issue regarding a recall for sudden acceleration problems was rather intriguing. Our article told how the WSJ published a story saying the fault was down to driver error, quoting the U.S. Department of Transport as its source. However the DOT later said it had made no comment about the investigation yet.

Now we hear from Chris Shunk over on Autoblog, that Automotive News reports Toyota has been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury in New York. In February this year an investigation initiated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration looked into a potential steering issue in almost 750,000 Toyota Corolla and Matrix 2009 and 2010 vehicles. The NHTSA had received 168 complaints and Toyota had received 437 reports of the issue.

The investigation is still ongoing although Toyota stated the concerns did not require a safety recall, instead offering to service any of the vehicles concerned with the problem. Now Toyota has been subpoenaed it must turn over documentation relating to a particular component of the steering mechanism although it has not yet confirmed publicly which models the subpoena relates to.

This is the third subpoena issued to Toyota in 2010 and is one more headache Toyota could no doubt do without. For more on this to go autoblog.com. What do you think about the issues surrounding Toyota? Has it put you off purchasing a Toyota, or maybe you have a different opinion? We’d be interested to receive your comments about this.
