Official iPhone app for Twitter now out

It has been announced today that an official Twitter iPhone and iPod touch App is now free and available from the Apple iTunes App Store. For those of you who’ve looked before and not found this app, it was previously called Tweetie and was available at $2.99.
However last month Twitter acquired Tweetie and have now released the app as Twitter for iPhone, presumably so that people can actually find it. This information comes to us from Chloe Albanesius at PC Mag, sourced from Twitter co-founder Biz Stone’s blog.
Stone said, “Obviously we saw room for improvement. Starting today, Twitter for iPhone and iPod touch is available for free on the iTunes App Store.” Stone also added that it is not necessary to have a Twitter account to use the app, although users will be able to sign up for an account through the app if they wish, instead of going to the website.
The app will allow people to look at the trends, read the Top Tweets, discover popular users and locate public Tweets that they are geographically close to, after download.
