PFA Player of the Year 2010 goes to…Wayne Rooney

Despite his current injury problems Wayne Rooney’s standings in the professional football world continue to grow with news this evening that he has been named the Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year 2010. The Manchester United hero has gone from strength to strength since he stepped out from the shadow of Christiano Ronaldo.

He has scored a stunning 34 goals already so far this season, according to the telegraph.co.uk, and Manchester United still have a chance to win the Premier League title, although Chelsea’s 7-0 win against Stoke today puts them 1 point ahead again at present.

If he also goes on to win the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award it would be a deserved double for the man who already previously won PFA Young Player of the Year in both 2005 and 2006. It’s now four times in a row that a Manchester United player has won the prestigious PFA Player of the Year award.

Not so many players made it to the short list this year, maybe because it was so clear-cut who the very top players had been. The others up for the award were Chelsea’s Didier Drogba, Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez, who also of course previously played for Manchester United, and Cesc Fabregas of Arsenal. The Young Player of the Year 2010 went to Aston Villa’s James Milner.

For more on this story go to telegraph.co.uk. I for one think that Wayne Rooney was a more than worthy winner of this prominent award. I’d be interested in hearing whether you agree with me, or maybe you think there was a more deserved winner?
