Lalit Modi denies allegations of corruption in the IPL

Lalit Modi denies allegations of corruption in the IPL

An investigation in India is being carried out into the financing of the Indian Premier League (IPL), amid allegations of corruption, with India’s finance minister saying “no wrong-doer would be spared” during the scrutiny.

The junior foreign minister, Shashi Tharoor has already resigned after a storm about the part he played in bidding for one of the IPL’s teams. However IPL chief, Lalit Modi, has described the claims of funding irregularities as “absolutely baseless”.

Lawmakers in opposition though claim that the league has been used for money-laundering and illegal betting. Pranab Mukherjee, the Finance Minister says the investigation is already underway by tax authorities and would look into “all aspects including sources of funding”.

Meanwhile Indian cricket’s governing body will assemble to talk about the allegations, and there have been reports in the media to say there are plans to force Lalit Modi from office. For full story go to BBC News.
