Latest news on Wayne Rooney, Manchester United and England football star, is that his injury is not as serious as first thought. In our story last night we reported that he had had to be helped off the field limping after suffering an injury in the closing moments of Manchester United’s loss to Bayern Munich in their Championship League match.

There were fears that not only would he miss crucial matches in the closing stages of the Premiership title race, but it seemed more than likely that he may even miss the World Cup 2010. Thankfully today those fears have allayed somewhat and England fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief.

Although Rooney still faces a scan to double-check the damage, it seems as though it may be nothing worse than a sprained ankle which will mean he’ll be out of action for between 2 and 4 weeks. However he’ll still miss vital matches in the next two weeks against Chelsea and Blackburn and against Bayern Munich in the second league of their Championship League match next week.

Manchester United had become virtually dependent on Rooney’s goal scoring skills. He’s totalled 34 goals this season, way more than Dimitar Berbatov who Manchester United will now be relying on to up his game.
