Best April Fools Day Pranks and Jokes

It’s the time of year that everyone loves or hates. Tomorrow is April Fool’s Day 2010 and if you’re looking for some of the best April Fool’s pranks and jokes of all time this is the place to be. These pranks were judged by notoriety, merit and the number of people duped, and are just a selection from a list of 100 compiled by the museum of hoaxes.com.

At No. 1 in the list is the one that everybody must have heard from. It’s the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest from 1957 broadcasted on the BBC’s respected series Panorama. It involved the story of how Swiss spaghetti farmers were enjoying a bumper crop because of the near abolition of the spaghetti weevil. This was accompanied by scenes of harvesting spaghetti by people picking it off trees. It was such a convincing report that many people phoned the BBC to ask where they could get their own spaghetti tree. It’s a true classic in our eyes.

Another on the list at No. 3 was from 1962 and happened in Sweden. They announced viewers could make their black and white TV’s into color ones by pulling a nylon stocking over it, and demonstrated how to do it. There was only 1 TV channel in Sweden at the time and it only broadcast in black and white, yet still many were fooled.

One of the best in my opinion though is at No. 4 on the list, about the Taco Liberty Bell which occurred in 1996. Many of you will remember this as it caused uproar at the time. It was announced that the Liberty Bell has been purchased by the Taco Bell Corporation and re-named the Taco Liberty Bell. Many thousands were outraged at the news and called to complain. The best example ever perhaps of thinking on your feet came from Mike McCurry, a White House press secretary. When questioned about his thoughts on the sale he quickly replied that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and would now be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial, one of the best comebacks of all time.
