Katie Spotz, Youngest to Row Solo Across the Atlantic

A momentous feat occurred yesterday when Katie Spotz, a 22-year-old American woman, completed her mission to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean. As she reached Guyana and touched a pier there, her journey was over and she had achieved the success she worked so hard for.
Katie had been on her own at sea for more than 2 months and must have been comforted by the hugs of her father and brother when she arrived, as hundreds of well-wishers cheered her triumph. Her rowing boat had measured only 6 metres long and her arduous journey was 2,817 miles (4,533 kilometres) long, lasting since January 3 when she started out from Senegal.
Her goal was not so much to achieve personal glory but to raise awareness and funds for the Blue Planet Run Foundation, a charity trying to achieve the goal of clean drinking water for all people of the world. To achieve her aim she had to row around 10 hours a day, drifting at night on her boat equipped with solar panels for power, a laptop and satellite phone.
Only this past Saturday Katie had to extinguish a fire when a piece of equipment ignited. She is a woman of amazing feats as she has already cycled across the U.S. and in 2008 she swam the 325 mile length of the Allegheny River in Pennsylvania. For more information go to The Associated Press. What do you think of Katie’s stupendous achievement and what do you imagine she might do next?
