60 Minutes Documentary:Derek Paravicini, Musical Savant plus VIDEO

Yesterday night’s edition of the popular ’60 Minutes’ documentaries featured an amazing man with a gift for music. The man is Derek Paravicini, a 30-year-old British savant, and his astounding story stunned viewers who rarely see anything like this man and his talent.

Derek Paravicini is not only a savant who is unable to communicate in the usual ways with people, but he is also blind. However if Leslie Stahl asked him to play any piece of music on the piano he could remember the piece and play it perfectly, or also alter the style of the piece to that of other artists.

The condition Derek suffers from was made known to millions of people in the film Rainman, in which the main character was played by Dustin Hoffman. The real Rainman was Kim Peek who sadly died last year at the age of 58. That’s not to say that all savants are geniuses but Rainman was, and Derek certainly is, as anybody who saw him play last night would agree with.
