Google Android market share increase: RIM, Apple, WinMo Worried
U.S share statistics for January for mobile manufacture and platform marketing are now available and tell an interesting story. If we look at smartphone platforms it’s apparent that Android, iPhone and Blackberry OS are all doing particularly well, while Palm and Windows Mobile have seen considerable falls.
The Androids gain will be of major concern to its competitors as the figures show it’s gained an impressive 4.3 % over the quarter, as opposed to WinMo’s substantial loss of 4%. Palm’s share of the market also dropped 2.1 %, but many Palm OS handsets are coming off contract at the moment so this is less surprising.
It seems that many people currently dropping WinMo are turning to Android instead. Blackberry’s still dominate the American smartphone market though, with RIM’s total share of subscribers steady at 43%, while Apple’s share has risen only 0.3 % over the quarter, demonstrating they are just holding their own.
