Hawaii Tsunami 2010: Video shows the worst didn’t happen

When the devastating 8.8 earthquake hit Chile recently, giant waves headed for Hawaii and the surrounding islands. The entire region was then put on high alert for a tsunami, which inspired great fear and triggered evacuations, as people feared the worst.

But according to a report at associatedcontent.com, video footage of the 2010 Hawaii tsunami shows the rising oceans, but not much worse beyond that. Yes, the big waves and water did come to the shores, but the damage appears to be minimal at this stage.

The worst case scenario that came to mind for many was the 2004 earthquake that occurred near the Indian Ocean, which triggered the most horrific tsunami in recent history. No one expected such a horror yesterday, but people thought it was better to be safe than sorry.

In anticipation of the 2010 Hawaii tsunami, about 100,000 people were evacuated, but many people stayed in the state to record videos to post on the Internet. The videos show waves of up to about 3-8 feet getting to shore, but the damage wasn’t widespread.
