Smell forces emergency landing for a British airways flight

Terrified passengers who were flying out of Barcelona, heading for London were sent into darkness as flight BA 487, had to return to Barcelona just 20 minutes into the flight because of a strange smell in the cockpit.
The pilot who noticed the smell called for a senior crew member to join him in the cockpit “immediately” over his tannoy according to witnesses. The flight took of at 8.25 pm local time but returned to Spain soon after. According to one passenger Joe Braidwood who said “Everyone began to fidget as it became clear something was wrong.
Apparently the captain made an announcement over his tannoy that due to a strange smell in the cockpit and that they would have to return and make an emergency landing, Moments later all the lighting cut out. Braidwood added that he was told the “pilots were wearing their oxygen masks in the cockpit because the fumes were so bad.”
