Humana Job Cuts: 2500 will lose their jobs

Humana Job Cuts: 2500 will lose their jobs

There’s bad news for employment with the news that Humana have announced up to 2,500 jobs will go in a bid to downsize the company. This total includes at least 750 from the Louisville headquarters.

Michael B. McAllister, the Humana CEO, said in a statement that the cutback of the workforce was a necessary move for the company as the insurer has to adapt to having less plan members. It is hoped that the losses may be offset by new jobs to build Web-based tools enabling medical staff to follow how much is being spent on health care, and some staff losing their current jobs may be able to transfer to new posts.

Other insurers have also cut many jobs since the recession hit, but city and state administrators seem to be convinced that the cuts, although harmful at present, will put the company in a good position for expansion in the future.

This news comes just weeks after Humana declared profits of over $1 billion in 2009, up 61 percent from the previous year. For more on this story go to courier-journal.com.
