At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Facebook have announced Facebook Zero, a new text-only version of its social networking site. The company have said this move will not only be easier on operator’s networks but will make it easier to look at on mobiles.
Facebook Zero is anticipated to be introduced in the coming months when operators will have to sign up to offer the service. It will be particularly apt for countries where the infrastructure is not as efficient as more developed countries.
Service providers currently endeavouring to cope with the vast traffic produced by the social networking site will be pleased and no doubt also relieved by the news. Figures from the GSM Association and comScore show that Facebook leads the field in mobile internet use in the UK.
In December alone over 4.8 billion minutes were spent online by UK mobile internet users, with Facebook accountable for 2.6 billion page views. How do you think this new move will affect Facebook’s fortunes?
