Prime Minister challenges election result in Ukraine

Prime Minister challenges election result in Ukraine

The official victor of the presidential election in Ukraine has been announced as Viktor Yanukovich. However Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has disputed the result.

Even though Western overseers have stated the election was proper, the Prime Minister asserts the result was fixed. Mr Yanukovich was declared the winner with a leeway of just 3.5 per cent. The new President has demanded that Ms Tymoshenko should resign but she has so far resisted.

She has advocated though that there should not be mass protests on the streets, similar to the Orange Revolution in 2004, when citizens demanded the results be counted again. She says for a country in the midst of a recession, to go through this again would be too unsettling.

It seems as though an official appeal will be placed although it will take some days for the evidence to be investigated. Meanwhile US President Barack Obama has congratulated Mr Yanukovich, along with other senior figures in world politics.
