BA Heathrow Crash: safety rules doesn’t cover Ice

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has finally released its report into the BA crash at Heathrow airport over two years ago. The plane was carrying 136 passengers back from Beijing when it lost power.

It was confirmed that a build up of ice in the fuel system, which stopped the flow of fuel to the engines and the safety rules did not take into account this phenomenon as the risk was unrecognized at that time.” The Airplane fell short of the runway by 330 meters; no-one suffered any major injuries.

Captain Peter Burkill, was aware of a possible engine thrust problem just 43 seconds before he landed. He in fact tried to increase the power with no response from the engines. 18 safety recommendations have now been addressed including the ability of an aircraft to withstand an accident.
