Two fatalities reported after US east coast blizzard

The east coast of America braced itself today (Monday) for a new storm after snowfall left thousands of people without power, transportation paralyzed and the federal government even shut down.

Bulldozers had to be used after a record of 3ft of snow fell in many places. People struggled to get to work, hundreds of emergency personnel tried to clear roads of snow that kept vehicles, trains and planes simply stranded. Washington DC was hit with one of the worst blizzards in its entire history.

The sad news came in that at least two people were killed as much of the east coast was buried, President Obama referred to the conditions as “snowmageddon”. Roofs collapsed under the weight of the snow including at a firehouse in northern Virginia. This is the second massive storm to hit the region this winter after a December storm dumped some two feet of snow in the area.
