Holocaust Memorial Day is now recognized internationally as a commemorated day on 27th January each year. The date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust urges everyone around the world to pause and reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behavior go unnoticed. More people are listening and recording the first-hand accounts provided by people like Emanuel Grossman who was one of the first Americans to help liberate the Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War II.
6 million Jews and millions of others were murdered in Nazi-occupied Europe, however many lived to tell their stories. A spokesman for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Arthur Berger said that the accounts of the survivors are extremely important so that future atrocities can be prevented.
