Airport Security Changes: Forget gadgets, think information

Airport Security Changes: Forget gadgets, think information

Most members of the public know that terrorists are planning something, somewhere in the world and it always hits home when something is attempted. Christmas Day saw the attempted destruction of a Northwest Airlines airplane while over Detroit, and this has increased the need for airport security changes.

Boston.com has reported that some security analysts see the pursuit for better technologies to detect explosives before they’re make it to airplanes, as a waste of time and money. They report that analysts feel the money is better spent on training of airline employees and improved intelligence sharing.

Andrew Thomas – editor-in-chief of the Journal of Transportation Security – said that Amsterdam airport workers should have known the US government watch list included Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. Better explosives scanners may not have been needed if the airport workers were better trained.

If money was spent to better train security and airport workers, then we could be more focused on bad people than bad things. Do you agree with some analysts? Is better intelligence the answer?
