Issue 3 Ohio 2009 Results: Shows Casino Support

The people of Ohio will soon be able to visit Las Vegas-style casinos in their very own state, after the 2009 results show a lot support Issue 3. And that is despite rejection of the statewide issue in the Trumbull, Columbiana and Mahoning counties.
Even though he is obviously disappointed with the statewide results, Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman David Betras, said that he was proud of the unity shown by all the voters that were against the issue in the Mahoning Valley.
According to unofficial results from the Ohio Secretary of State’s office, the gambling issue was actually winning, with 53.08 percent of the votes, to 46.92 percent that were opposed. And that was with 92 percent of the statewide voted counted.
Supporters of the casinos spent over $35 million on their campaign, whereas the people that were opposed to the issue, spent over $5 million to fight it. Supporters of the casinos say that the projects will create 34,000 new jobs for people.

It is a sad day for me. I have a bad feeling about this issue passing, families will suffer irepairable damage. Our hard earned money will be wasted. Crime rate will rise, Prostitution will be brought into this mess. Bad decision. God Bless us all.
Enough. This is a far cry from Vegas. Quit going on by what the opposing commercials say. If that was truly the case would the Fraternal Order of Police support this issue. This is good for Ohio and its economy.
Marie, how do predict that families will “suffer irreparable damage” just because of a casinos? And prostitution? Mighty presumptuous stereotypes indeed.
Marie this is why you should not believe in god.
im sorry but are you retarded? prostitution? it didnt say it was bring the city of las vegas here woman, get real.
are you kidding Marie? Why don’t you take a trip to Mountiaineer, look at the number of OHIO cars in the parking lot, and the town is benefiting too. Before you make a blanket statement that is regurgitated media propaganda, use your head, think for yourself. OMG… crime rate rising, prostitution, bologna.
No this is very bad for Ohio. Of course the Fraternal Order of Police support this issue. Taken from an article by NBC 4, “Drum points out that Issue 3 supporters project that it would create tens of millions of dollars in new tax revenue for city and county governments each year, including $16 million annually to Franklin County, and $24 million each year to Columbus. There is no guarantee of how the money would be spent, but it could easily pay for local police salaries, benefits, equipment.” Just to emphasize my point, read that last sentence again. “There is no guarantee of how the money would be spent, BUT IT COULD EASILY PAY FOR LOCAL POLICE SALARIES, BENEFITS, EQUIPMENT.” Don’t you see that the Fraternal Order of Police have an incentive to support this issue? They could potentially get higher salaries, more benefits, and more equipment. Of course they support this issue. They are throwing safety out the window. I mean think about it. If you had the opportunity to get a higher salary, no matter how wrong the situation was, I’m sure you would take it. Hardly anybody would go against getting a higher salary plus the other amenities. Sure, the passing of this issue may help our economy at the time being, but is it really worth sacrificing our moral values? People who voted on this issue will regret it later on. Unfortunately, once these casinos are built, there will be no turning back. As time goes by, people will realize it was a mistake. Anyways, I hope I cleared that up for you Ryan. On a side note, have a nice rest of the day everybody.
This is job security for the FOP in the casino cities. I would have preferred factory jobs to the mess that will be created by the casinos. A lot of us voted against this, but we will still have to pay, in more ways than one.
I think the F.O.P. would support it since the rise in crime will help them meet their quotas faster HAHA
It is a sad day for Cleveland. Mark my words this will be the bane of existence for Clevelanders. I have a degree in tourism and Hospitality management and I have studied Travel and Urban development extensively. It doesn’t matter who endorses it Ryan, this will grease the pockets of the wealthy people while bringing disaster to those who live around it. If you’ve ever visited Atlantic City, Detroit, New Orleans, Mississippi, all places where gambling was brought into the community to be a savior, it has done nothing or brought the absolute worst to the area. Everything around the areas where the casinos lye are dilapidated and struggling, and people are confused by the flashing lights and glamour of it all but it really depresses the area surrounding it. This is before my time but remember how the Ohio Lottery was supposed to be our savior? NOT…it is a money maker but has it done anything for Cleveland Schools, our economy…ANYTHING? They promise no long term jobs, diversity in high level positions, they will hire people who don’t live in the state. They never ever ever do what they promise. This is Big Biz Baby and it aint coming to help the folks who live here.
ryan – the police support this issue because they get a percentage of the casino tax for training. also when crime does increase they will be able to hire more people – thus creating jobs in their departments. did you even read all of what issue 3 entails?
You oppenents of 3 are retarded. This city already has Crime, Prostitution and Drugs. Families will be fine. If you do not want to Gamble and you are mad that it passed, then DO NOT GO! SHUT UP AND STAY HOME! IT’S AS SIMPLE AS THAT. The best part of it all, we are putting it to that state up north again by taking away some of their tax revenue.
Cynthia, yes a lot of people voted against this issue, and they will have to live with the fact that they were out numbered, just like those of us that voted for McCain, we now have to live the the fact that we were outnumbered by the supporters of “change”!!! There is a little give and take in America! This is why we have a DEMOCRACY!!!! GET OVER IT!!!! If you didn’t want it that bad, then you should’ve been one of the people out sharing your opinion BEFORE the election.
Vicki, just because I did not communicate with you does not mean that I spoke to no one. Get over yourself already! Yes, in a democracy the greater number of votes wins, However, that does not mean that the rest of us need to leave quietly. This issue could still be overturned if a large enough bloc worked at it. That might be a futile attempt, but that is our right.
I know people are worried about all the bad that is going to happen from this passing. However, if people had common sense and knew what their limits were this would never be a issue. We live in America for a reason. To have the right to make the decisions that we make. You can not keep everyone from being able to enjoy the casino’s and all the good that they can bring everyone because of those people that can’t control themselves. I am not a very political person or ever care to be one. However, I am tired of being denied job oppurtunities and the enjoyment of a casino.
I understand both sides but I’m a supporter of the issue, I’m a union construction worker and this will keep me and my family afloat since construction work around here is few and far between. You wanna talk about damaging families, if this issue didn’t pass I might not have work and my family would be struggling to live. If you are worried about people from other states taking jobs in the casino your nuts! There may be a handful that relocate but most of these people are settled in where they live and people that are unemployed in these cities will apply for these jobs.
im sorry but marie is right..and unfortnately noone is going to realize that until something bad happens..hwo many of you are going to go downtown and check out the casino? how many of you are going to drink? alot…which means alot of drunk driving..this isn’t like the neighborhood bar..your going to get drunk ….and then your going to drive home..the fop approves it b/c they know people are going to drink and drive….just wait until one these idiots hit you on the road or someone you love…people are going to commit theft even more now, just so that they can pawn whatever they stole from you and go down to the casino..u watch and see….everything bad is going to multiply..i know theres a lot of good people out there with good heads on their shoulders who are going to make good choices..but for every level minded person there is one person who is going to be out there gambling away their rent money or their last dollar trying to hit it big..or maybe its that father whose trying to hit it big and get his family out of debt..trust me..everyone will be tempted to go..and we’ll all lose more than what we have to gain
I have common sense too, and I know Ohio needs jobs, but after the casinos are built, the jobs will be gone. Waitresses, bartenders, etc. will be needed, but after a couple of years, there won’t be many “new” jobs. Some of you can’t see the forest because of the trees…………….thank you leland so glad you see past the trees!
Question.. do any of y’all live in Cleveland… like not the suburbs but the city… have you driven through 30th???? Have you seen East Cleveland for the people who live in the suburbs do you watch crime 360??? Cleveland can get NO WORSE then what it is… Have you driven down Kinsman, St. Clair, Superior, Harvard, Miles, Union…. SLAVIC VILLAGE… 55th, 105th, 116th, 93th, Hough, Wade Park, 131st, Cedar, Quincy…. until y’all even stop for gas over on any of the streets named and really understand the REAL city of Cleveland SHUT THE F UP PLEASE… nothing can get any WORSE then what it is…. HOW DO U FIGURE the casinos are gonna make Cleveland any worse??? See everyone does not have the privilege of being silver spoon fed and live in Westlake, Aurora, Solon, Pepper Pike, Strongsville, Rocky River, or Orange Village…. there are more crack heads and dope boys then wealthy people…. and some of these people on here DO NOT UNDERSTAND what its like to really live in crime… there is NO WAY these casinos can bring MORE crime then what there already is…. I live right down the street from the SERIAL KILLER…. and he was not killin anybody for anything related to a casino… by the way Detroit has an EXTREMELY HIGH crime rate as well… and I dare someone to find out how many crimes are casino related…. I mean seriously u people are really trying to take away what we DON’T have… have u ever thought that these casinos might even cut crime??? It might give some of these guys something to do with their time rather then sell drugs… I mean optimistic…. “change for Ohio”….
Leah, I live off superior in Cleveland not in Cleveland Heights… I am not saying that the perils of society are brought on by Casinos…I am sayin that there will be a concentration of it…people will travel to it and at the end of the day will not HELP what we see on Kinsman, St. Clair, Superior, Harvard, Miles, Union…. SLAVIC VILLAGE… 55th, 105th, 116th, 93th, Hough, Wade Park, 131st, Cedar, Quincy… THIS IS BIG BIZ…they are going to come take all the money and nothing will resolve the issues that plague our city streets. People are sick and it’s sad what has happened to all those women, but do you think anyone cares, do you think that a Casino is gonna somehow solve all of these issues…Im going to let you take a wild guess… Ben I am all for creating jobs…but in a few years those jobs will disappate and unfortunately like you many others will be back in the same spot… We need long term SUSTAINABLE change….not something that changes every time we get a new Mayor…We have a huge opportunity…WE CANT GET WORST as some of you have said…We can get better and be in a worst off position than we are now…Educate yourselves about the case studies done about casinos in urban communities…with the one exception Las Vegas///CLEVELAND >>>is in SERIOUS TROUBLE…
Issue 21… okay all that to say?????? So as I understand it your saying that with the casinos in ohio (THE WHOLE STATE) it will hurt our city more than help??? I don’t care about some study that has nothing 2 do with us specifically… REGARDLESS there will always be crime… just because the city has a casino????? So what ab Detroit??? Whose crime rate blows ours out the water??? HOW MANY CRIMES ARE COMMITTED BECAUSE OF THE CASINOS???? Ummm very few… Detroit is also a “urban” city and has a high unemployment rate… so I guess that is because of the casinos as well… I mean come on…. don’t try to control people with your personal theories…
It is actually not a personal theory Leah…I am asking that you also consider other factors, as I totally understand the idea that there needs to be a serious plan to get OHIO/Cleveland on track. I only mention those areas because you made the point to say that these opinions have come from surburban folks who have silver spoons in there mouth. That discredits your entire theory about my points. I never once said that any of these things were caused by the Casinos, that was your infantile reasoning. Studies are clearly very important determining factors in the success or failure rates of these type of things…thats why there are entire professions that focus on feasibility…This has been up on the chopping block before and was cut down before, but now people are in desparation, which is understandable in this horrible economy…but again I just ask that you consider the consequenses…I am not here to change your opinion…hell they are gooing to build the city, but I guarantee it will get bad before(if) they ever get etter as it realtes to the BUSINESS of the Casino. The Perils of society will always be…if we think that bringing casinos will help it…we need a sustainable plan to correct our failing education systems…not bring something that fosters (AND IT HAS BEEN PROVEN) the behavior that has and will continue to hurt our “urban” communities. Further more, yes Detroit blows our crime out of the water, but have you looked at the studies of the crime before and after the casinos? I have not…but you can make a more educated opinion about the situation. The point of me mentioning other urban areas is that they have too reached out for a casino to “save their economy”…”better education in the area” …”improve education”…IT HAS FAILED EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY TIME! WHY, You ask Leah WHY? because it is never about the people who live in the area ….it is about BUSINESS…very few will reap the benefits…while the people who live there reap all the bad things that it can potentially bring…These companies get so big that they eventuallyinfluence/run the politics in the city/state that theyre in….I cant control anyone Leah…just me…and thats hard sometimes…Good day…Happy Gambling!
