Thai AIDS Vaccine Trial: Second Analysis Results

The AIDS vaccine trial from last month has now been tested for a secondary analysis, the results show that the vaccine could provide some protection, but not as high as was first thought. The results from last month had apparently come about by chance.
More than 16,000 people were tested in the initial trials, the results showed that the AIDS vaccine had reduced infection by 31%; these results certainly came as a surprise. The second analysis of the date was a little less optimistic, showing that infections were only reduced by 26%.
According to the LA Times, the secondary analysis results have been available for the past couple of weeks; however, the full results of the analysis were only made available once the New England Journal of Medicine published them online today.
Although the findings were not as good as we first thought the results are still positive and a step in the right direction. We just have to make certain that the momentum keeps up.
